Unlucky Dip (19/05/2020)

I get A LOT of emails, not as many as big publications obviously, but for me, I get a lot, and I literally can’t keep up with them all. This means I either take virtually forever getting around to some reviews, resulting in the peak promotion period usually having been and gone, for that I do apologise. Sometimes I forget about submissions entirely, for which I also apologise, and a lot of the time, I’m sent singles. Now, this blog has been running since 2014 and 99% of the content here, bar the odd rare article, is comprised of EP and album reviews. I’ve nothing against the humble single, I miss the days of picking up CD singles in Woolworths wondering what B-Sides you’d be treated to…but writing a full review for just A single is something I’ve always personally deemed a bit of a ball ache.

Going forward, I am going to try to, once a week (The key word being try here, I’m making no promises) present a general collection of single submissions from my inbox in one article, to try and ensure I don’t miss out on potential gems, and more importantly, to also clear some space in my inbox (At this time of writing I have around 650 unread emails…LOL). With that in mind, here are seven randomly selected tracks that I have been sent, that I would like to share with you, in the first GTGC Unlucky Dip; the result of combining Speed Dating with the heartfelt Comedy Roast.

Heavyman - "Baby Jean"

Picture
We're going to kick this feature off with a 4-piece from London by the name of HEAVYMAN. Comprising of vocalist/guitarist Charlie Yang, drummer Tom Papaloizou (I'm pretty sure he was in "The League Of Gentlemen"?) bassist Igor Fonseca and lead guitarist Nick Burns, they recently got in touch, stating that were fans of the blog and were themselves fueled by alcohol and sarcasm, asking me to check out their debut single "Baby Jean". How could I possible refuse?

Initially sounding like something you'd hear from early TURBONEGRO, it soon transitions into a more methodical, groove-rich slow jam of a southern blues rock effort. It covers all the bases with some slick guitar work and vocal swagger for some textbook classic blues rock. With more tracks scheduled to be released over the coming months, these are ones to watch.

Rory K - "Heat Thru Your Body"

Picture
"Now this is a story all about how my life got, at most, mildly inconvenienced, but I'd like to take a minute just to share this my friend, and talk about this new single by The Fresh Prince Of Bellend".

You know all the meme's with "Now listen here you little shit..."? Well that's essentially me right now with RORY K. A native of downtown Manhattan, New York, Rory was born into a musical family, with his dad having been in the late 80's socio-political rock group BLACK 47. So imagine his dad's disappointment to see Rory here peddling some of the most uninspired, cringe-worthy rap/hip-hop an eleventeen-year-old would perform, on the track "Heat Thru Your Body"...I bet he finds vanilla spicy.

From the intro that sounds like seagulls having a stroke, to the combination of abysmal lyrics and self-indulgent vocals...and the embarrassing video, it's just...no. The bit where Rory is, (I'll use this term loosely) "performing" in front of some street graffiti, why are you holding a mic? You look like an absolute tit mate. And you emailed me three times for this? Assuming I hadn't replied because I couldn't stop dancing to the track? I would sooner invite my enemies to dance upon my grave than dance to this myself. And it's through*...for the record. I'm beginning to regret this new feature already...

Deejay Centipede - "Twerk It Out"

Picture
I honestly don't know why I get sent this stuff...I'm not against rap and however many hip-hop subcultures there actually are, but it is SO rare I find any that I genuinely like. I can appreciate a flow, or a beat, sure, but there is too much recycled rap out there full of cliches about money, bitches, drugs and ho's and quite frankly I don't care about any of it.

"Twerk It Out" is the new track from Cleveland Ohio based hio-hop veteran DEEJAY CENTIPEDE, who has been spinning records since the 80's, and it features Sonny Vajra and Tee Hova...which...means absolutely nothing to me. It's got a certain 90's vibe going on which I guess you could describe as "fresh", with some soft synths poorly underlying some genuinely irritating clapping percussion. A lot of autotune going on in the vocals, and I can't lie, outside of this blog, I wouldn't listen to this...I'd rather be in the middle of a Human Centipede truth be told, but that's just me. As of now I'm outlawing Twerking on GTGC.

Mother's Cake - "Toxic Brother"

Picture
Austrian psychedelic rock trio MOTHER'S CAKE (Consisting of lead vocalist/guitarist Yves Krismer, bassist Benedikt Trenkwalder and drummer/backing vocalist Jan Haussels) are set to release their new album sometime in the Autumn of 2020, and tease interesting things to come with their latest single "Toxic Brother".

The onslaught of fuzzy guitars and echoed vocals, delivered among a frenetic, up-tempo barrage of stoner sludge-punk is as fun as it is exciting; the energy is real here and it'll easily appeal to fans of say, EXIT_INTERNATIONAL. The gradual fade-out of the track counters the increasing levels of insanity as you can hear the mental breakdown as it happens...this is a solid track.

Smiling Assassin - "National Pride"

Picture
Returning to the UK now and more specifically; Hull, and we have a four-piece hardcore punk outfit by the name of SMILING ASSASSIN. Consisting of vocalist George Garnett, drummer Robbie Johnson, guitarist Josh Rogerson and bassist Casey Stead, they were forwarded to me by the wonderful folk over at Rage PR.

The new socio-political single "National Pride" is taken off the forthcoming album "Plight Of The Millennial" which is penciled for release on May 31st, and it combines all the vitriolic aggression of hardcore punk with the instrumental impatience of trash metal, easily taking influence from the likes of THE EXPLOITED or MUNICIPAL WASTE. It's an intense listen and suggests that the new album is going to be an absolute scorcher.

Hayden Brenen - "Mi Carino (feat. L.D.N.)"

Picture
Now I'll start off by saying this...on initial listen, it's not as annoying as "Despacito"...but I'm not ruling it out overtime. It's another one of this Latino-inspired R'n'B/rap offerings that's meant to sound all smooth and sexy in the club, but I'd rather just sit in the corner with a warm bottle of Bacardi squeezing fresh lime directly into my eyeballs.

L.D.N's contribution is fine and his rapping isn't bad, probably the most enjoyable aspect of this track in all fairness, but that doesn't really say much. Also, Mi Carino means My Sweety...creepy much. Your Nan singing this is she mate? Bomboclaat don't say shit like sweety fam ya get me? Real talk blud. I just lost the plot, literally watched it run off...

Calling All Astronauts - "Welcome To The Black Bloc"

Picture
We round off this selection of tracks by coming full circle back to London, to find CALLING ALL ASTRONAUTS an their newest single "Welcome To The Black Bloc". The trio (Consisting of vocalist/programmer David B, guitarist JJ and bassist Paul "Buzzsaw McCrudden) mix elements of punk rock attitude and an electronic, almost light industrial tone for their sound, bridging the likes of PITCHSHIFTER, MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE and MINISTRY for a no-nonsense blast of socio-political neo-dystopian noise.

The single is officially released on May 29th, with the new album, entitled "#Resist" dropping shortly after on June 5th, via Supersonic Media which I'm sure is going to an incredibly charged listen.

This isn’t a review as such…but more of a call to arms if you will. Now, while I’ve touched on the current Coronavirus pandemic in recent reviews in a predominantly light-hearted manner, or at least trying to make light of the situation to maybe try to boost morale, it is in so many aspects in fact, a VERY serious situation. Businesses are shutting down, people are losing their jobs, people are losing their means to support their families, hell; people are fucking DYING! In such a time of need for many in an age of advanced communication and technology, some of us have never felt so far apart and, given the unprecedented nature of this global pandemic, it’s a hard realisation.

While the government (Here in the UK at least) is doing what it can to help certain businesses cover expenses while the country is on lock down, not everyone is fortunate enough to benefit from such subsidies and this is where both you and your local music venues come in. Small and independent venues have had a hard enough time over the last couple of years as it is, with several having to close doors up and down the country for financial reasons, or for dodgy housing development projects etc, so the last thing they need is a forced closure due to some Asian-ass virus because some dude in China did an Ozzy Osbourne with an infected bat.

I can’t say with certainty that your local venue is doing the same right now (Though if they are I urge you to support in any which way you can) but FUEL ROCK CLUB in Cardiff is one of the clubs that would be incredibly grateful for your support.  The award winning bar/venue situated in Womanby Street in the Welsh capital naturally relies on its punters and gig goers to pay the bills and the wages…but under forced closure, they face difficult times. Luckily, while we may not be currently able to attend the club in person, we can still help and support the club during this testing time, thanks to a new compilation album.

XIII PROMOTIONS
based out of Cardiff have reached out to 30 bands and artists who have played, performed or promoted at the club, to piece together a 30-track compilation entitled “Rock Down: A Fuel Rock Club Benefit Compilation”. Available on Bandcamp as a digital download for £7.50, all proceeds raised will go towards ensuring the club doesn’t fall onto harder times that it’s already been put under, by contributing to venue upkeep etc while they have no custom. It’s a hell of an eclectic compilation, ranging from black and death metal, to punk, post-rock, blues, funk and even electronica, showcasing a plethora of genres represented by multiple scenes, who all support Fuel.  The link to Fuel’s Facebook is below, so if you can, go and buy some Fuel merch through their official channels, and the bandcamp link is also included. My personal favourites include tracks by GLASS HEART and BONDAGE FAIRIES…but there’s literally something for everyone here. Go check it out, it’s for a wholesome cause.

Pressure Cracks - "This Is Called Survival" EP

IGGY POP once famously sang about having a certain “Lust For Life”; and that is still impressively evident even to this day, as the rock ‘n’ roll icon continues to perform with zero shits to give, despite being the age of 72. It’s probably fair to say then, that few people share that same level of energy and passion for music and performing, but if anyone deserves to be mentioned in the same breath, it would have to be Jason Butler.

From 2002-2017 you would have known him as the front-man of critically acclaimed post-rock hardcore crew LETLIVE, who won over metal heads and punks alike with their frenetic live shows and sheer lunacy. More recently you may have been familiar with his role in FEVER 333 who are also riding a wave of critical praise for very similar reasons…but Jason Butler has a burning desire to scream like an absolute banshee in any way, shape or form he can…seriously as vocalists go, he’s like the fucking Duracell bunny on a 3 day coke binge. With that said, it’s no surprise we find him in yet another project; PRESSURE CRACKS. Completed by former members of SCARS OF TOMORROW and WEREWOLF CONGRESS, the Californian’s have recently released their sophomore EP entitled “This Is Called Survival”…but will I survive this EP? Let’s go all Bear Grylls and find out…

The EP opens up with quite the depressingly titled “Like Father Like None” and it begins with some old, recorded spoken word sample of American re-offender statistics, before the band ferociously tear into a riff-heavy barrage of near blast beats, screeching guitars and the equivalently feral vocals. A deep cut about broken homes, a broken society and the past repeating itself, but also acknowledgement of those pitfalls and the determination to beat the cycle, taking a stab at the system and wanting to set a better example, wanting to be a better father figure…a really intense intro this; but full of self-motivation and determination. “Ready For You” follows up with a similar theme running through the tracks narrative…erasing the past and fleeing a moral sense of conviction but asking for forgiveness for previous actions. The riffs here come hard and heavy with more of that hardcore punk influence bursting through, although the track does become a touch repetitive as it reaches its climax.

Third track “Shhh” is ironically anything BUT quiet as we get another sharp dose of blistering hardcore. The tempo and pacing here only emphasising the intensity of the bands sound, which really can also be said of closing track “Big T Youth”…well, truth be told it can really be said about this whole EP in all fairness. Clocking in at only 12 minutes, Pressure Cracks have combined a sense of personal anguish and resentment with social awareness into four utterly chaotic bursts of noise and semi-antiestablishmentarianism. Bridging those elements of punk and metal, it really allows for a cathartic release of pent up energy, pulling absolutely no punches. Pre-existing Fans of hardcore will appreciate this without saying, but it’s quite unlikely to draw much new attention to the subgenre, as it’s not exactly easy listening shall we say. Its niche…it’s noisy…it’s intractable and ultimately, nicely done. [6]

Through The Noise - "Dualism"

Whenever an artist, PR company or record label forwards me some new music to check out, I’m always interested to see what part of the world it comes from. Often I’ve mentioned certain parts of the world being affiliated with certain scenes or styles musically, but it’s always nice to find diversity from within a town, city or general region…and today’s review highlights just that. Lund, Sweden, may not be a destination that jumps out at you as being instantly recognisable, but for any fellow Eurovision fans out there you may know that it the home of one MÅNS ZELMERLÖW, and while I would more than happily listen to Sweden’s answer to JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE for this review, we won’t be covering any pop music for now. “Thank fuck” I can already hear you say…

Lund also happens to be the home of a band by the name of THROUGH THE NOISE, and the team over at Eclipse Records forwarded me their latest album “Dualism” to check out. The five-piece (Consisting of vocalist Jowl Nyberg, guitarists Victor Adonis and Marcus Skantz, bassist Martin Lingonblad and drummer Peter Liwgren) were founded back in 2010, and in the years that followed they established themselves as more than promising up-and-comers within Sweden’s thriving metal community, especially with their 2015 debut “Fall Of Gaia”, but now in 2019 they want to well and truly stamp their name among the metalcore elite and hope to do so with these nine new tracks. Hellfire Magazine summed things up by describing the album as having ‘Interesting, surprisingly well-functioning songs’…back handed compliment and a half that! Consider me intrigued!

We open up with a track called “Shattered” and the virtually instant impact of hard hitting chords, with the duel pummelling of riffs and percussion gives this an intense start! It’s bass-heavy and subtly down-tuned but doesn’t compromise whatsoever when it comes to delivering a harsh dose of surging metal. To a degree you could say it bridges a gap between the likes of ATREYU and CHILDREN OF BODOM, but however you look at it; it doesn’t give a fuck…it just mauls. Early album highlight “Psychomachia” follows up next and we’re joined by guest vocalist Jahna Lund of DEATH BY HORSE fame. For the most part it’s more generally expected metalcore, teetering on generic with its methodical chugging and breakdown-inspired stylistics, but the clean vocals provided by Jahna allow for more melody to flow through the chorus and it’s all balanced very well.

A lot of the album does stick to a firm metalcore/deathcore formula for the most part but it does have more than a couple of points of worth. “House Of Asterion” combines up-tempo post-hardcore with subtle thrash and death elements resulting in an incredibly frenetic listen. “Secret Project” houses a touch more melodic instrumentation, with Jahna again providing backing gang-vocal harmony…the nods to Swedish heavyweights IN FLAMES are proudly on display here. Let’s be honest mind OF COURSE they were going to have a bit of In Flames in them, they’re a Swedish metal band for fuck sake! “Maktbegär” retains all of the pace and again, pummels the listener with a fine slab of scando-death-punk not too unlike the likes of KVELERTAK and MAN THE MACHETES in places, while “Meaning Through Noise” takes on an almost industrial tone, akin to the likes of STATIC-X.

Overall, while not exactly original, bearing in mind recent musical trends and the fact they come from one of the most saturated areas on the planet when it comes to alternative metal, Through The Noise have still managed to deliver a crisp and enjoyable metalcore album. The brief crossover portions work well and they’ve added enough flavour to ensure they don’t blend into genre obscurity like Homer Simpson walking backwards into a hedge row. Put Through The Noise through your speakers, as this album is certainly worth a listen. [7]

Holding Absence - "Holding Absence"

South Wales has always played an important role in the UK’s music scene; be it the love and support for traditional grass roots venues such as Fuel in Cardiff, or the old TJ’s in Newport, but more importantly the bands themselves that have emerged from the valleys and beyond that have helped put the area firmly on the map. BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE may be riding high at the moment as one of the UK’s biggest modern metal exports, but there’s a bit of a transitional period in play right now as many if not 99% of the biggest names from the area have called it a day. Luckily however there’s always a group of plucky up-and-comers aiming for that brass ring and willing to pick up the ball to run with it…which brings us to today’s band; HOLDING ABSENCE.

Fresh off of the back of his previous band, FALLING WITH STYLE, vocalist Lucas Woodland helped form Holding Absence (Who are completed by guitarists Scott Carey and Chris Smitheram, bassist James Joseph and drummer Ashley Green) as a means of truly delving into his song writing capabilities. With an emphasis on love; its nuances and the  roller-coaster of emotions that accompanies it, their initial singles garnered them much critical praise and the adoration of fans very early on. Momentum grew as they released their split EP with LOATHE and the acclaim kept coming, so in 2018, they began working on their debut full length album. Now, here in 2019 we find that album finally released after much anticipation, as the Cardiff quintet declare that this is…”Holding Absence”…

The album opens up with “Perish” and it’s a bleak start as we find ourselves confronting the heaviness of mental health and its effects on relationships…with over a minute of introductory resonance, it sets a sense of tranquility with its flowing soundscapes before the apropos breakdown, a nice instrumental metaphor for a fragile state of mind. This is mirrored by Lucas himself as he switches from lulling, morose clean vocals to a blistering onslaught of intense shouting amidst a barrage of riffs, and its solid slab of alternative post-hardcore. “Your Love (Has Ruined My Life)” continues with the theme of seemingly depressing song-titles as it also seemingly repeats a similar formula; a soothing intro segment, albeit drastically cut, leading into a wall of noise that transitions into more clean vocals, before a soaring chorus. It’s lyrically where the song stands out as Lucas digs deep into his own level of self-awareness, with an acceptance of his own emotional state; he is an impassioned performer, credit where credit is due.

Speaking of depressing there are a couple of tracks that should come with a repeat prescription for Citalopram in all honesty; “Marigold” is a sombre piano ballad that’s as cold as it is cathartic…and however sweet the admittedly emotional performance is, with its numerous floral references there’s very little blossoming here…which can be similarly said of closing track “Wilt” (Plant related segue for the win). The longest track that’s presented, at near seven minutes, it speaks of the helplessness of watching a love wither away…a heart wrenching story of appreciating the love for its original beauty, like a bouquet of flowers, but those flowers will eventually die and there’s nothing you can do about it. Completing the hat-trick of heavy-heartedness would then be “A Godsend” which again, with its morose tone and low-fi, shoegaze inspired delivery leaves the listener almost despondent.

It isn’t ALL doom and gloom however, this isn’t a MORRISSEY record for fuck sake, and that’s reinforced by album highlight “Like A Shadow”. A sharp dose of angst-ridden, punk-inspired post-rock…it’s got a great rhythm and an infectious chorus hook full of pop aesthetics that you simply can’t help but move to, this is incredibly enjoyable stuff this. “To Fall Asleep” too, despite its heavy message of wanting support through life’s darkest periods is a wonderfully up-beat dose of melodic alt. rock, likewise with “Monochrome” which would easily appeal to fans of artists such as TAKING BACK SUNDAY for example. Ultimately as one of the UK’s hottest rising prospects, they’re showing plenty of promise for big things to come. This may only be their debut and it hasn’t been out long, but their fan base is a loyal and enthusing one, and is growing with each gig and festival slot, no matter how big or small the stage. Raw and passionate, they have all the talent to help lead a new generation of Welsh artists into the spotlight. Just…cheer up lads though yeah? [7]

While She Sleeps - "SO WHAT?"

Birmingham, as we all know, is the spiritual home of heavy metal and the myriad of alternative genres that followed it, but it’s not the only city in the UK with serious rock ‘n’ roll credentials. Yes today we’re going to be turning our attention to Sheffield and to be fair, its home to several big-name artists itself, spanning from all walks of rock and metal culture, having spawned everyone from DEF LEPPARD to BRING ME THE HORIZON over the years…and while the latter are at the very peak of their career riding high with chart success, infiltrating the mainstream, their contemporaries aren’t too far behind…enter WHILE SHE SLEEPS. (That sounds creepier than intended…)

The five-piece (Consisting of vocalist Lawrence Taylor, drummer Adam Savage, bassist Aaran McKenzie and guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh) have been going strong since 2006 and over that time they’ve steadily established themselves as one of the UK’s hottest up-and-coming metal acts. With their last album “You Are We” receiving heaps of critical praise and breaking into the UK charts, all eyes were wide awake in anticipation for their eagerly awaited follow up, and the lads delivered at the beginning of March with album number four; “SO WHAT?”…if I may paraphrase MEGADETH for a second…so far, so good…so what’s in store for us here? Let’s find out…

The album opens up with “ANTI-SOCIAL” and while initially ticking off the clichés with the police sirens and dogs barking, planting the image of troubled neighbourhoods over at the bad side of town, it soon descends into a flurry of almost djent inspired metalcore riffage. Lawrence’s vocals are initially hushed before a bold yet simplistic chorus of ‘I’m not anti-social, I’m anti-bullshit’…the almost nu-metal tones of the instrumentation carry a sense of vitriol and as a whole the track is brimming with piss and vinegar. The disdain for the current state of society, awash with corruption has become too much and here those sentiments are hammered home, especially in the incredibly powerful accompanying video; this is intense stuff. “I’VE SEEN IT ALL” initially follows up with some crazed fret-wankery, before  bellowed gang vocals are layered within the groove-heavy slab of hard rock, giving the track a prominently anthemic feel.

The title track again utilises a rich groove, coupled with duel vocal / guitar harmonies over a hook laden chorus, which can also be said for “THE GUILTY PARTY” and album highlight “SET YOU FREE”…the former, another up-tempo offering with a blistering chorus and more gang vocals, while the latter doubles down on the pop-production quality. The clean vocals are much more prominent and there’s a fun, almost pop-punk tone to the chorus and it all flows so smoothly, before the album eventually closes up on “GATES OF PARADISE”; another fine blend of mauling metalcore and melody, even including some almost rap-inspired vocals towards the breakdown. There was a lot of hype and anticipation around this record, and I will gladly point out that it IS a quality modern metal record; the riffs, the aggression; it’s all on point, just as the softer moments are and it’s a well-balanced album overall. The metalcore aspects themselves ARE growing tired truth be told, there’s only so many screamed vocals and breakdowns you can hear before you begin to feel you’ve heard all of it as many bands apply a copy and paste formula, but there’s enough here to warrant repeat listens, switching up JUST enough to keep their sound fresh.  They aren’t quite on the same level as their fellow Sheffield residents BMTH right now commercially, but the music speaks for itself, and this is an album well worth checking out. Heartsick - "Sleep Cycles"

Lansing, Michigan; the very heart of Michigan State and a pivotal player in the US educational sector, housing a plethora of universities, law schools, medical schools and more…but what are they like with metal? That’s where today’s band comes in…let me introduce you to HEARTSICK. Having formed nearly 20 years ago, through a love of progressive metalcore and amidst the NWOAHM boom, the four-piece (Consisting of vocalist Alfonso Civile, guitarist Jerred Pruneau, bassist Waylon Fox and drummer Justin Robinson) have over time built a strong following stateside with their intense, unforgiving live shows, supporting big-hitters such as FEAR FACTORY and HATEBREED. As they unleash their newest album “Sleep Cycles”, we have to ask, can the lads from Lansing school US on the metal? Let’s find out…

The album opens up like Corey Graves’ wife with a track called “Affair” and it’s not long before we’re met with Alfonso’s visceral snarls, curling themselves around some deep riffs; the metalcore style prominent, as it switches up between subtle gang-vocal melody for the chorus and being instrumentally itching for the imminent breakdown. It ends abruptly but generally it’s a fairly standard though enjoyable metal track; a decent start. “Hate Anthem” keeps up the momentum with its primarily more thrash metal inspired sound; the tempo and intensity are all turned up a notch and in ways this harks back to early SLIPKNOT in its delivery; a proper head banger of a track this.

Given the quartets admiration for metalcore however it’s not always a swift smack in the mush as they are more than capable of incorporating ample melody within their instrumentation, especially on the latter half of the album. “Slave Labor” in particular with its hushed atmospherics, whispered vocal delivery and soaring, emotive chorus, almost combining anthemic indie rock with chilling metal aesthetics; it’s quite hypnotic. “Her Heart” is another and again, with the soaring clean vocals it adds diversity to their audible assault, while single “Love Letter” embraces a more sombre, chilled out post-rock approach, appealing to your inner emo with their own take on a heartfelt rock ballad; a genuinely touching track.

Ultimately “Sleep Cycles” is a fitting title as one minute it’s crushing and aggressively vibrant; wide awake and alert, but they know how to reel it back and soothe you too without managing to make you dose of completely, and they’ve balanced this out really well over the course of the thirteen tracks. Currently unsigned but, it’s hard to see why quite frankly (Unless it’s by choice of course), Heartsick know how to make you feel the feels and this is a solid record all in all…[7]

Blacklist 9 - "Mentally Ill, Legally Sane"

Jonathan Davis and Fred Durst once very lovingly tried to tell us that, it’s all in the family…and though while more of a roast battle than anything else, ideologically, the sentiment rings true more often than not. Families and close relatives especially will always have a natural bond that’s hard to find elsewhere, and this can be incredibly beneficial for musicians and performers. You can look back through history and find some of the most successful recording artists of all time have been blood relatives; THE BEE GEES, THE BEACH BOYS, THE JACKSON 5…and even up to modern times the importance and value of that bond has been hammered home by the sad passing of Tom Searle of ARCHITECTS…and this brings us to today’s band. Let me introduce you to BLACKLIST 9.

Originally formed in Southern California back in 2013, they are the brainchild of founding members (Also father and son duo) Lonnie and Kyle Silva. With Lonnie on drums and Kyle taking up guitars, they initially started as all bands do, jamming in the garage, making some noise…but this soon turned into an aspiration and an actual project as opposed to a hobby. After a demo or two with some local musicians and some extensive local gigging, they caught the bug; this is what they wanted to do and so, taking this seriously, they had a shuffle in the ranks. Brought in were new vocalist Graham Fletcher and bassist Ray Burke, and so began the journey of writing and recording their proper debut. Scheduled for release this coming March via Eclipse Records, let’s find out why Blacklist 9 are “Mentally Ill, Legally Sane”…

The album opens up with “Azzip” and although no more than an intro piece, it’s absolutely fucking demented…some quiet knocking leading into this, intensifying tinny guitar and a wall of sheer, noise, clutter and distortion. Some of the squeals emanating from these speakers right now leads me to believe I’m PRETTY sure someone is being recorded raping a pig here, but it’s hard to tell really…utterly psychotic. First track proper then, “Stand In Line” actually gives some musicianship which after that opening is frankly fucking welcome! With the deep, bass-heavy riffs and coarse production it takes on an up-tempo, southern groove metal / sludge crossover style…though the solo is clean…a bit like finding a pound coin that’s been dropped in dog shit. I mean it’s a pound coin, you might need it for a trolley like, but you aren’t picking it up. On a serious note, if anything you could liken this to a drunken VIKING SKULL demo with added heaviness.

“Kali Smile”
has a drawn-out riff-driven intro that eventually incorporates some up-beat, rhythmic percussion and again it’s all about the groove with these guitar hooks…in ways it can be likened to the likes of MUDVAYNE in places instrumentally, though aesthetically the nu-metal is more of a nuance. The vocals are still brash and aggressive, and are about as appealing as cauliflower ear for the most part, though it has to be said the death growls salvage things in the long run. “Liars” takes a more classic-thrash inspired approach with its pacey delivery and there are hints of SLAYER and PANTERA trickling through here as influences, the solo guitar work is again, a highlight. Early demo track “Madness” makes a reappearance, nothing truly stand out as it slowly chugs itself along, before we finish up on “Legally Sane”; returning to that southern groove metal style, the album’s title track, inspired the trial of mass-shooter James Holmes who murdered 12 people in that dreadful Colorado theatre shooting.

Coming back to my initial point about family bonds and chemistry, it’s easy to see that, musically things ARE working out here; for a debut first and foremost and secondly for a sludge metal inspired musical style, they’re on the right path, Lonnie and Kyle clearly have a vision…the riffs and percussion are solid and the overall guitar work is fine, there’s definitely a market for this, but it’s vocally where these fall down. If it weren’t for the death metal growls Graham would miss the mark completely here, as when he’s not growling he’s grating…there’s no REAL tone to his voice and it all just becomes angry venting after a while. Honestly, they’d be mentally ill to not consider replacing him and really work on that aspect of the bands overall presentation, for it’s those vocals that bring some decent metal down. Blacklist 9 by name but, not as many listens for me to blacklist them…for now at least. [2]

PictureNever meet your heroes, proclaims Markus Wikander...as he holds his signed Anthrax album. The pooch sniffs hypocrisy...
Recently I premiered a new feature for the GTGC reviews page, something which I dubbed "My Wreckord Collection". It's a simple premise, artists and band members from all walks of life take a break from plugging and promoting their own material, and instead get to nerd out over their own personal tastes and private record collections. On our first entry we went in hard and heavy, literally, as Mike Churry, drummer from Philadelphia death metal outfit BASILYSK briefly talked us through five of his favourite obscure death metal albums. In this installment, we'll be hearing from Markus Wikander, vocalist / guitarist of Swedish hardcore thrashers LEACH, who released their newest album "Hymns For The Hollow" in 2018...lets percolate through his personal picks and see what inspires him.

IRON MAIDEN - "The X factor" (Picture Disk)

"The first one with Blaze Bayley and I guess the most hated Maiden album (Might be Futureal). To me this is when I first discovered them and a total classic. Might have been the first album I ever bought but not sure. Love the lack of distorted guitars yet such a dark production. Got it as a picture disc a few years back."

Favorite song: "Fortunes Of War."

ANTHRAX - "Penikufesin" EP

"First vinyl I ever bought and the album that made me wanna play guitar. Bought it at a second hand store and I got to borrow my dads player. Played the B-side over and over again (Only had three songs). First one with Anthrax for me and didn't have a clue that most of the songs where covers!."

Favorite song: "Parasite" (KISS).

ANTHRAX - "Spreading The Disease"

"So after that I got really into Anthrax. A few years later they reunited as the "classic" lineup (2005?). They were coming to Sweden Rock Festival and I was really stoked about it. They were having this signing booth so I was standing in line with a friend. He had this patched up jeans vest with his favorite bands and he was a power metal guy which I thought was kind of dorky. For some reason he left the line going somewhere, but he asked me to hold his vest 'cause it was hot, so I did. Finally finished the line and I was standing there with them asking if they could sign my copy of "Spreading The Disease", which they did. But they also pointed at the vest and a patch with Swedish power metal band HAMMERFALL and asked me "Do you like that band?". I was so fucking nervous and didn't know what to say so I said "Yeah, sure". They looked at each other and started giggling, probably thinking "Who is this lame fuck". I wanted to disappear, I was so embarrassed! Never meet your heroes..."

Favorite song: "A.I.R"

MEGADETH - "Killing Is My Business..."

"'Peace Sells...' is without doubt my favorite 'deth album but I gotta' pick this one because it's so goddam ugly. Everything is bad about this cover. Found the original Combat release so I had to have it!"

Favorite song: "Killing Is My Business"

Picture
NUCLEAR ASSAULT - "Good Times, Bad Times"

"If the "Killing.." cover is bad in a bad way, this one is bad in a good way! Don't know what I like about it really but there's just some punk ingredient that I just like. With their faces badly pasted on there with the exploding Hindenburg. Works well with the title!"

Favorite song: "Hang The Pope" (Live)

Picture
MASTODON - "Crack The Skye"

"If somebody put a gun to my head and I had to pick ONE album that I had to listen to for the rest of my life, I'd pick this one. There's so much nuances that you discover for each listen and I think I can never grow tired of this one."

Favorite song: "The Czar"

My Own Co-Pilot - "Textures" EP

Social media comes under a lot of scrutiny at times…if you pay any attention to certain arguments at least, and while I can appreciate that, occasionally it can be a dangerous or questionable place (Anyone for an unsolicited dick pic or spot of grooming?) it has nothing but beneficial qualities in terms of brand marketing, exposure and communication if used wisely (Last chance for that dick pic…no?).  I say this because it’s a great place to both freely promote yourself and spread your product, and this ties in to today’s review on a couple of levels…let me explain.

Recently through sharing my reviews on Instagram (Follow me @gavthegothicchav) I was contacted by a gentleman named Michal Kosinski, who asked me to check out his music. While nothing new for the blog, it was the first direct request through Instagram specifically which I have to firstly thank Michal for. Based in Sweden, he informed me of his project named MY OWN CO-PILOT, requesting that I listen to his debut EP “Textures”…all pretty straightforward, but here it gets a little more interesting. It turns out the singer; Derrek Siemieniuk, hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and already fronts a band Stateside by the name of SAVE EMPTY VESSELS. Michal upon hearing this band, liked their style and immediately contacted Derrek requesting his services and suggesting a collaboration. Curious and inspired, Derrek obliged, recording and then sending over his vocals ready to be mixed…and despite a distance of nearly 4,000 miles, social media and communication was able to bring these artists together to complete My Own Co-Pilot. With that, via some sort of, social media inception, from Sweden, via the US through to me on Instagram, let’s check out “Textures”…

We begin with “Exit You” which could mean one of two things; either we’re about to experience some form of, outer-body musical transcendence…or it shares it’s characteristics with faecal matter. Kicking things off rather slowly with some basic percussion; simple guitar notes gently plucking away, we gradually evolve into a more complete shoegaze-inspired piece with Derrek’s subdued vocals…that is until the frenetic, almost tantrum-fuelled chorus. Here we find the pair’s joint affection for early post-rock and hardcore; acts like REUBEN and SILVERSTEIN spring to mind upon hearing this, it’s a nice dynamic though not as up-tempo as preferred. “When The Missing Return” keeps this up with a much more vibrant start, the raw, garage-rock feel allowing the track to truly breath, if you ignore the vocal loop mid track…despite its prog elements it’s just filler essentially and comes off as annoying rather than artistic. The lyrical repetition is delivered in such a dull, flat manner that it really does spoil an otherwise decent track.

“This Crying”
follows down a similar path itself, blending the weightier, rock aspects with some more enjoyable vocal melodies this time around, allowing it to come off as a generally more polished track in comparison, and providing the EP’s standout track. Sadly we finish up on a disappointing note courtesy of “Remembering”, which is ironic as truthfully I’d rather forget this one. Musically fine; the wall of guitar supporting a blitz of crashing cymbals provides a level of intensity, and it carries a decent rhythm leading up to its climax too, but for the most part here Derrek’s vocal delivery is arguably the blandest of the whole EP. When he’s screaming and in-your-face its fine, but sometimes his drone can induce levels of boredom not experienced since, well, half way through track two. Generally speaking the EP is a decent foray into MOCP’s debut musical adventure…this partnership has its good and bad aspects, but it’s a decent debut none the less…what’s more intriguing however, is where Michal takes this next. Was this a one-off and purely an indulgence? Will he and Derrek collaborate further in future, where they can grow as a side project, or will he take this on a new conceptual journey enlisting different co-pilots? Who knows, but until then, if you miss the early 00’s alt. rock / emo scene, then you’ll likely appreciate this pair in their current guise. [5]

Canavar - "Canavar"

When it comes to the UK music scene, there’s always hot-spots…an obvious one is Camden which has more quality venues than you can shake a drum stick at…Nottingham has Rock City which is a favourite among many gig-goers…Wales too has a great history of grass roots music support, but today we’ll be looking at Southampton. With its own iconic venues such as the Guildhall and The Joiners, over the past couple of years it’s produced some top quality artists such as BURY TOMORROW and of course, CREEPER, who’ve had an almost stratospheric rise to the top of the alternative rock scene…so naturally with So’ton back on the map, we’re going to be hearing about more bands looking to make a breakthrough, which brings us to today.

Let me introduce you to CANAVAR…consisting of vocalist / guitarist Deklan Webb, guitarist Jack Bowden, bassist Rowan Rashley and drummer Toby Rashley, they bring together a chaotic blend of heavy metal and hardcore punk to create an equally commanding and confident sound; so confident in fact that they totally skipped recording an EP…no testing the water for these fuckers they dove straight into a full length album! With a name roughly translating as Monster…let’s see just how monstrous they sound on “Canavar”.

We open up with the lead single “Sacrilege” and initially we’ve got this really bouncy, up-tempo punk-rock piece; the vocals are clean though very rough around the edges giving it that traditional skater-punk vibe…but this soon descends into a more traditional metal style breakdown and a crazy solo! The classic metal approach charging through, but this only leads us into the tracks climax, foreshadowing the rest of the album…Deklan switches up his vocals and sounds almost possessed such is the change in tone, the inclusion of growls being so sudden, it’s an interesting start. “Brick By Brick” follows up and while it has certain thrash-inspired elements running through its riffs there is still a pretty prominent punk backbone here; you can hear the influence the likes of RISE AGAINST or even say, ANTI-FLAG have had musically on the 4-piece, and naturally as a result it’s quite another pacey offering.

Those same thrash elements can again be heard in “Fire Inside” which for all intents and purposes sounds like the bastard offspring of some weird METALLICA / SLAYER crossover experiment from a 6-string perspective, while vocally again it bridges the gap between hardcore punk and heavy metal, absolutely full of piss and vinegar. The main highlight however comes courtesy of “Devil’s In The Details” which initially embraces a subtle MISFITS vibe while also harbouring more modern alternative rock aspects, mirroring artists like MATCHBOOK ROMANCE and the aforementioned Creeper. The rest of the album generally fleets back and forth, hand picking certain qualities from all genres listed above…there are slower cuts like “Deadly Sins” and “Moral Compass”…then there’s the less than two-minute flurry of closing track “Ready And Willing”, and while  musically they’re not reinventing the wheel or anything as such here, this is for the most part a really fun album and that’s really down to THEIR enjoyment, the band are having a fucking whale of a time making noise and it resonates. Personally I’d like to hear them focus on being a solid punk unit as it’s that area they sound strongest and more fluid musically, but overall, it’s a fine album. [7]

The main support slot for the festival this year goes to URSUS...the Swindon based boys maybe new kids on the block only having fully formed in 2017 but their blistering blend of metalcore and nu-metal is proving effective as they've been making both a name for themselves and all the right noises, earning them this support slot. Check them out and their brand new singles "Self-Affliction" and "Purity" on the day!

Joining them are an array of Wales' finest underground / local-scene alternative metal outfits including Celtic Mosh regulars EPIC FAIL, Port Talbot's own I AM GRAVITY and Cardiff up-and-comers UPON THE DYING who will be promoting their newest album "Delusions". American Standards - "Anti-Melody"

I’m going to be perfectly honest with you right now; I am officially useless when it comes to time-keeping and scheduling when it comes to this blog! Seriously, I can sit here and make notes, plan some specific reviews and posts then think, right, my free time is here, here and here, so I’ll sort out some content…what ACTUALLY happens instead however is I just find myself opening emails and forgetting about them while I’m lost, procrastinating in the annals of YouTube. Well I’m rectifying one such instance today! Allow me to introduce to you AMERICAN STANDARDS.

I was sent an email by their front-man Brandon Kellum, in which he forwarded his bands (Completed by guitarist Corey Skowronski, bassist Steven Mandell and drummer Mitch Hosier) latest album “Anti-Melody”…asking if I would be so kind to check it out! Better late than never Brandon, though I do apologise! Anyway, formed in 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona, the 4-piece share a love of all things hardcore and post-punk, inspired by big-hitters such as CONVERGE and POISON THE WELL and channelled those influences through this; their 4th album. It wasn’t without its setbacks mind you, as prior to recording, original founding guitarist Cody Conrad committed suicide, which was followed shortly after by the death of Brandon’s own father to cancer…these events, coupled with the state of the world around them pushed them towards writing the most personal album of their career, so let’s see what standards these American’s have…

We open up with “Writers Block Party” and they waste no time getting all up in your face with their blend of punk-infused hardcore rock…with their combination of intense thrashing, full of piss and vinegar, plus the weighty riffs layered over Brandon’s snarling vocal delivery, leading up to a climactic flurry, the album starts as it means to go on; with absolutely no nonsense whatsoever. “Carpe Diem, Tomorrow” follows up and it’s a touch slower in tempo with some off-kilter, almost prog-infused guitar work, bordering on djent in places, before we’re treated to an impromptu and legitimately enjoyable guitar solo which itself takes the track up a level.

Further highlights include “Broken Culture”, which at under two-minutes long may only provide a short, sharp piece of music but it still manages to include some great, groove-heavy guitar work, blunt as it is brief; their punk roots shine through here. By contrast, “Bartenders Without Wings” slows things down completely with a raw, melancholy soaked sense of vulnerability plucked straight out of the MEWITHOUTYOU playbook, while closing track “Chicago Overcoat” plunges itself deep within sludge-metal territory…methodical and with more than a touch of EYEHATEGOD and MELVINS at its core, it ends proceedings on an altogether more sluggish note. For a band that’s gone completely DIY, despite only being 8 tracks and less than half an hour in length this album shows plenty of potential. While firmly rooted in that post-punk / hardcore genre bracket they’re clearly not afraid to dabble to give some of these tracks that extra flavour (Regardless of how off-putting sludge sounds) and it’s this that will likely carry them forward, as they CAN become a little samey when they’re just rip-roaring their way through a bitter, angry track-list, though to its credit the album title doesn’t lie; you won’t find much in terms of easy listening here. Set Before Us - "Vitae"

Picture
For those of you living under a rock, we’re at the business end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup right now and all the talk over the past weekend was about England beating Sweden to reach the semi-finals (I must say I love a raging semi)…but while I’m not here to celebrate England’s victory (The tabloids have done enough of that) I will share my commiserations with Sweden by highlighting one of their new up-and-coming bands. From the capital of Stockholm, home to a famous lineage of artists ranging from ABBA to OPETH, comes SET BEFORE US. The five-piece (Consisting of vocalist Erik Tropp, guitarists Niklas Edstrom and Jesper Nilsson, bassist Hampus Andersson and drummer Emanuel Borgefors) formed back in 2012 and their influences are rooted in a lot of modern metalcore…on August 31st they unleash their brand new album “Vitae” via Eclipse Records…let’s check it out…

The album wastes virtually no time at all getting underway with “Untainted” and immediately we’re met with the guttural growls of Edstrom and Tropp, while by stark contrast the guitars here meander through your ears with melody and grace…the combination of beauty and breakdowns a staple of Scandinavian melodic death metal and that’s utilised well here, however abrupt it may be. “Avalanche” follows up and keeps momentum going but does introduce subtle clean vocals (Albeit sparsely) alongside a few well-placed hooks and some catchy chord progression to give the track more of a feeling of accessibility. Speaking of accessibility, both “Identity” and “Harbor” take us down increasingly more mainstream directions…the former has an instant early 00’s post-hardcore feel, like we’re listening to a band from the old Victory Records roster (Think BAYSIDE or HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS) before the latter then surprises everyone with a feisty little acoustic ballad, leading into a classic, 80’s influenced guitar driven crescendo; it really is a wonderful little track.

Elsewhere “Oblivion” capitalises on the use of gang-vocals and a hook-laden chorus to further push for a more accessible sound amidst the mauling, before closing track “Charon” opts for an emotive piano ballad to round things off, tip-toeing around the risk of becoming completely emo…had it not been for the deathly growls seemingly possessing the track halfway through…do they save the track or spoil it? You be the judge. Such ferocity does work however on the brief but brutal “Fountain Of Youth” and the groove heavy “The Eternal Fight”, but lead single “Ignite” is a touch generic and disappointing, with its fade-out serving little to no benefit. Ultimately despite some huge promise, this sounds like a band who despite the quality and confidence to deliver a decent album, haven’t 100% decided what album they actually want to deliver, or at the very least are unsure of their preferred market. There’s stuff here taken from a fair selection of alternative influences…and while an enjoyable listen, sometimes it feels they’re unsure which way to go in terms of committing to a sound, not to suggest a band must stick to one style, more so to provide consistency but, on this evidence, wherever it is they’re heading, they’ll get there...and they probably wont take long. [6]

Jaws Of Deaf - "Delicious Discomfort" EP

If you’ve at all followed the UK’s alternative scene over the past say, ten years or so, then no doubt you will have at some point stumbled upon the work of Scott Lee Andrews. The wild Welshman originally found minor fame with mid-2000’s post-hardcore rhythm thieves MIDASUNO, before forming Cardiff-based chainsaw loving noise cartel EXIT_INTERNATIONAL, but, more recently, and arguably most notably, his collaboration with GINGER WILDHEART for the third installment of the darkly psychotic project MUTATION. Very prolific and reliable in underground UK music circles, Scott has always been about the intensity, the invigorating sense of finding pleasure in noise and chaos and here we find him working on yet another project to quench his own thirst for the unorthodox. Allow me to introduce to you JAWS OF DEAF and the EP “Delicious Discomfort”…6 tracks hand picked out of around 50 that Scott’s been working on, as he prepares to drop a full length album. Now settle down and get uncomfortable as we check it out…

We open up with “Bait & Switch” which at little over 2-minutes long is the shortest track on offer here and Scott wastes no time delving into his frantic, raucous, thrashy punk roots with an absolute bombardment of messy riffs and demented screeching’s. In his own words; “I really haven’t got a clue what it means”…and that’s partly the fun of it, sometimes noise for noise’ sake is therapeutic. We follow this up with the wonderfully titled “Porno Without The Fucking” and as ridiculous as the statement is, it’s no surprise to learn it came from a YouTube comment that Scott read…intended as a derogatory slur, it’s full of oxymoronic similes, riddled with daft humour, but also a deeper meaning of how the very medication that’s meant to help you can strip you of your identity, resulting in a creative catch-22…another interesting and ultimately fun track.

“Cupid Stunts”
is another brilliantly titled self-depreciating effort, with Scott using bleak humour and a wry smile as he sings with a jolly despair about his questionable decisions in life; full of melody and some surprising vocal harmonies it channels the likes of WEEZER in its overall tone and delivery, even down to the climatic key change and its possibly as accessible as you’re likely to find him on any record. Having said that, there’s also “Californian Frown” to take into account which I’ll be honest, initially reminded me of the credits sequence from “Bottom” but that’s something for another time. A bass-driven affair with wacky vocal delivery (Featuring guest vocalist Givvi Flynn), finding itself stuck between being musically designed for Exit_International but lyrically leaning towards Mutation, resulting in a quirky little, edgy indie-rock number. The final two tracks; “An Alone Wolf” is ripped straight out of “Ash Vs. The Evil Dead”; an animalistic take on grunge, before closing track “The World Looks Better From Behind” is an intentionally misogynistic play on words, but also utilises hidden depth with the idea of hindsight and nostalgia. Musically exploratory, dabbling in brass instrumentation for extra character, the drawl of Scott’s vocal harbors elements of Matt Bellamy from MUSE; elongating each note as the track is stretched towards its dying moments.

All in all despite being just six tracks in length, it more or less caters for everyone if you’re familiar with any of Scott’s previous work; it’s got the tumultuous punk-inspired tones of old, it’s got groove-heavy song writing at its core but it also retains a level of darkness brought on by his collaborations with Ginger…it’s not polished, it’s not fucking meant to be; it’s just raw, and rowdy and fun…he meant delicious discomfort quite literally.
